You put the pad down, take both hands off- and your character keeps walking. SURPRISED, right? Everyone is, the first time. That's drift, it's how most controllers die, and it's the thing that got me building this tester. The mean part is how slowly it creeps in, so you blame the game first (be honest, you already have!). Similarly, your stick may be sliding off centre right now without you noticing- here's what's going on inside, and what genuinely fixes it. Let's go.
Why it happens
Most sticks use tiny carbon potentiometers — little contacts that wear down every time you move the stick. Dust, skin oil and plain wear change the resistance the stick reports, so "centre" slowly slides away from zero.
Which is why, it usually isn't a defect you got unlucky with. It's wear. Cheap parts and heavy play just get there faster.
Step 1: Prove it before you open anything
Don't unscrew a thing until you've seen the numbers.
- Connect your pad (cable or Bluetooth, either works).
- Open the Tester and press any button to wake it up.
- Take your hands off the controller and watch the Analog Sticks panel.
- Now roll each stick slowly all the way around, then let go again.
A healthy stick rests dead-centre inside the faint deadzone ring, reads at or very near 0.00, and rolls smoothly with no jumps or dead spots. If the dot floats, circles, or the numbers refuse to settle, that stick has drift and you've confirmed it in ten seconds.
Step 2: Try the fixes, easiest first
Recalibrate and update firmware
PlayStation and Xbox both ship firmware updates that improve deadzone handling, and on PC your controller software (or Steam's settings) usually hides a calibration tool. This won't repair worn hardware — nothing software-side will — but it can mask mild drift enough to keep playing.
Clean the stick module
A short blast of compressed air around the stick base, or a little contact cleaner worked in while you move the stick, clears dust and oxidation off the contacts.
Best effort-to-payoff fix here, and it often buys months of extra life.
Replace the stick module
If cleaning doesn't hold, the potentiometer is worn through and no cleaner is bringing it back. Replacement modules are cheap, but you'll be soldering. Work slowly and note which screw came from where.

Upgrade to Hall-effect sticks
Hall-effect sticks read position with magnets instead of contacts, so there's nothing to wear away and they effectively don't drift. Drop-in kits exist for most popular pads, and if you're comfortable opening the controller, this is the fix that actually ends the problem.
When to just buy a new pad
If it's old, out of warranty, and cleaning didn't help, weigh the parts and the evening against the price of a new one. If it's still under warranty, claim it — drift is a known fault and you won't be the first.
After any fix, re-run the stick test and watch the numbers settle back to 0.00. That's the only proof that counts — and if you'd already shaken the controller, blown into it and sworn at it before finding this page, so has everyone else.
