You clean it. You calibrate it. Two days later your aim is creeping left again- and yes, that is as maddening as it feels! At that point the sensor inside the stick is physically worn out, and only a replacement module fixes it for good. Fair warning: this one wants a soldering iron (I'd rather say that now than four screws in- only sounds easy!). Let's get into it.
Confirm the module is the problem
- Take your hands off the sticks completely.
- Check them on the tester and watch the resting numbers.
- Clean the stick collars, then look again.
Movement above roughly 0.15 that comes straight back after cleaning means the sensor is worn rather than dirty. Replacement is the durable fix at that point.
Why consider Hall-effect sticks first
Since you are opening the controller anyway, decide now whether to fit a Hall-effect stick instead of another standard one. Standard sticks use carbon contacts that physically wear, which is what causes drift in the first place. Hall-effect sticks read position with a magnet and have no contacting parts, so the usual wear mechanism is simply gone.
What the repair community actually reports is encouraging but measured, and worth knowing before you spend:
- The genuine reason people switch is recurring drift on contact-based sticks. Hall-effect removes that wear mechanism.
- Long-term reports are strongly positive- after a good-quality swap, drift generally does not come back.
- The common advice is to treat it as a cure for drift, not preventive surgery on healthy sticks.
- It is not magic. Cheap units and QC misses exist, and some arrive needing recalibration.
- A stick swap only fixes the stick- worn shells, mushy buttons and bad triggers stay as they are.
- Some players note a slightly different feel, and there is an ongoing Hall-vs-TMR debate, with newer TMR sensors argued to track the tiniest movements a touch better.
Short version: if a stick is already drifting and you are in there with tools, a Hall-effect (or TMR) module is usually the smarter part to fit. If your sticks are fine, leave them alone.
What you'll need
- A replacement stick module matched to your exact controller model.
- A soldering iron with a fine tip, around 300-350 °C, and solder. (Several kits below- Joy-Con and Steam Deck especially- are solderless, so check before you buy an iron.)
- A desoldering pump or braid — this is the part people underestimate.
- Precision screwdrivers: Phillips, Torx security bits for Xbox, and a tri-wing for Switch.
- Flux. It makes desoldering dramatically easier and it's cheap.
The repair, controller by controller
Every soldered pad follows the same idea- open the shell, desolder the old module's pins, solder in the new one, then test before closing up. What changes is the screws, whether you even need an iron, and which module fits. Pick yours below. Each table lists standard and Hall-effect options with a direct buy link.

Xbox Series X/S (and Elite Series 2)
Xbox pads are the most involved of the bunch, because the stick is soldered and the case fights you a little. Give yourself an hour the first time.
Tools: T8H (T8 security) Torx bit, T6 Torx bit, opening tool, soldering iron (~375 °C), flux, desoldering pump and solder wick, flush cutters, tweezers, isopropyl alcohol.
- Slide off the battery cover and take the batteries out.
- Pry the left and right grip covers off from their inner edge- they clip hard, so expect some force.
- Peel back the battery-bay sticker to reveal the hidden screw, then remove all five T8-security screws (about 9.3 mm) and lift the top housing away.
- Twist a spudger into the gaps near the bumpers to release the midframe and lift it out.
- Lift the two coaxial antenna connectors straight up, then desolder the eight motor wires (the two red ones go back to the pads marked SQ3 and SQ7, so note that now).
- Remove the two T6 screws holding the small daughterboard and unclip it.
- You now reach the stick. Each module has 14 solder joints- 4 frame anchors, 6 for the potentiometers, 4 for the push-button. The trick the video uses is to cut the old module apart first: snap off the potentiometer tops, clip the metal frame with flush cutters, and pull the plastic out, so every pin desolders on its own instead of fighting all 14 at once.
- Flux each joint, heat it (15 seconds max), pull the solder with a pump, and finish stubborn holes with wick. Clear every through-hole- a blocked hole is exactly why a new stick won't seat.
- Clean the pads with isopropyl, drop the new module in flush, solder one anchor first to hold it square, then the remaining 13 pins. Check for bridges.
- Reassemble in reverse, and re-test before you fully close it.
- Calibrate: on the console, Settings → Devices & connections → Controllers; on PC, the Xbox Accessories app.
Watch out for: the grip covers release from the inner edge, not the outer; don't lose the SQ3/SQ7 red-wire pads; and never push a stick into an un-cleared hole. The Elite Series 2 is the same job in a tighter case, and the GuliKit kit below is cut to drop straight in.

PlayStation 5 DualSense (DS5)
The DualSense has the most fragile ribbons of the group, so slow hands win here.
Tools: Phillips screwdriver, opening picks, spudger, soldering iron (375-400 °C), flux, desoldering pump and wick, flush cutters, tweezers, isopropyl alcohol, helping-hands.
- Pry the middle trim off with opening picks, working from the bottom-right corner around the lower edges, then lift it over the sticks.
- Pop the L1 and R1 shoulder buttons off with a spudger.
- Remove the four 6.4 mm Phillips screws (two at the bottom corners, two behind L1/R1), release the headset-jack clips, and run a spudger down each edge to unclip the rear case.
- Disconnect the battery (pull the connector head, never the wires) and lift it out.
- Disconnect the ribbons in order: lower microphone, then the left and right trigger ribbons, then the upper microphone and touchpad ribbons. Lift each ZIF latch first- these tear if you yank.
- Lift the motherboard out, guiding the sticks through the front case. It stays tethered by the vibration-motor wires until you desolder those four wires (the two red ones sit nearest the edge, by the "R" mark).
- Pull the stick caps off. Each stick is 14 pins (4 anchors, 6 potentiometer, 4 button). As on the Xbox, cut the old module apart and desolder pin-by-pin rather than all at once.
- Flux, heat (15 s max), pump the solder, clear every through-hole, and clean with isopropyl.
- Seat the new module- Hall-effect kits add a small calibration board you solder in alongside- solder one anchor first, then all 14 pins, and check for bridges.
- Reassemble in reverse, minding the trigger ribbons and springs going back in, and test before closing.
- Calibrate with the DualSense calibration tool: open dualshock-tools.github.io in a browser and follow it.
Watch out for: the trigger ribbons and the touchpad ribbon are the easiest things to tear on the whole controller; and the two red motor wires must go back nearest the "R" marking.

PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 (DS4)
The DualShock 4 is the friendliest full-solder job here- a clean board and a very well-documented teardown.
Tools: Phillips screwdriver, opening pick, spudger, soldering iron with desoldering wick and flux, tweezers, helping-hands, isopropyl alcohol.
- Remove the four 6.4 mm Phillips screws on the back.
- Pry L1 and R1 off, then run an opening pick around the seam at a downward angle to release the six clips. The two near the triggers are delicate, so ease them from inside with a spudger (a small break there does not matter).
- Press L2 and R2 and slide the rear case off.
- Pull the interconnect ribbon out by its blue tab (note which way the tab faces), disconnect the battery by its connector head, and lift the battery out.
- Remove the reset-button extension and the battery bracket, then flip up the touchpad ZIF latch and release that cable.
- Remove the single 6.4 mm motherboard screw and lift the board, feeding the stick caps through the front while the vibration-motor wires stay attached.
- Hold the board in helping-hands. Melt the stick's joints with wick and flux- the trick iFixit calls out is to gently pull the stick while the solder is molten, which walks it out of the holes a little at a time.
- Clear every hole (a fine drill bit or a needle helps), confirm the new stick's pins match the original, seat it fully, and solder all the contacts.
- Clean the flux off with isopropyl and reassemble in reverse- reconnect the interconnect ribbon with the blue tab facing out.
Watch out for: model CUH-ZCT2U differs inside from the older ZCT1U, so check the sticker; and only ever pull a ribbon by its connector head or tab, never the cable.

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con
This is the one that needs no soldering at all- the stick unplugs. It is the easiest repair on the page, which is a small mercy given how reliably the Joy-Con drifts.
Tools: Tri-wing Y00 screwdriver, Phillips #00, opening pick, spudger, tweezers.
- Remove the four Y00 tri-wing screws (6.2 mm) from the back panel and lift it off- it comes away with barely any pressure.
- Open the Joy-Con like a book, charge rail facing away. Two cables still join the halves, so do not pull them apart.
- Pry the battery connector straight up with a spudger and lift the taped battery out.
- Remove the three 3.5 mm Phillips #00 screws in the metal midframe, then flip the midframe carefully- a thin ribbon still holds it.
- Flip up the ZIF latches and release, in order, the ZL cable, the minus-button cable (it runs over the stick), and then the joystick cable.
- Remove the two 3.5 mm Phillips #00 screws holding the stick and lift the old stick out, minding the thin black gasket around the hole.
- Drop the new stick in (if it is a GuliKit kit, press its ring sticker into the recess first), screw it down, and reconnect the three ribbons- each ZIF latch flipped fully closed.
- Rebuild in reverse, connect to the Switch, and calibrate: System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks. A 10-15 second power-cycle helps it re-detect.
Watch out for: those ribbons are tiny and tear if you tug at an angle; and a latch left half-open makes the new stick read nothing. The Switch Pro Controller is a different, soldered job- treat it like the pads above.

Steam Deck (LCD and OLED)
Good news again- Steam Deck sticks are solderless modules, and they keep the capacitive-touch feature. The catch is buying the right one: LCD and OLED sticks are different parts, and the LCD ships as Type A or Type B. Check yours first in Settings → System → Controller ID (MEDA = Type A, MHDA = Type B).
Tools (LCD): Phillips screwdriver, opening pick, spudger, tweezers. (OLED uses a T6 Torx for the back cover instead.)
- Drop the battery below 25%, enable battery storage mode in the BIOS, power down, and remove the microSD card.
- Remove the eight back-cover screws (on LCD: four coarse 9.5 mm, four fine 5.8 mm; OLED is eight T6 5.8 mm), then pry the cover off around its clips.
- Peel any foil tape off the hidden shield screw, remove the board-shield screws, and lift the shield.
- Disconnect the battery by its pull tab.
- At the thumbstick, lift the ZIF latch and free the ribbon, remove the three 5.2 mm screws, and lift the old module out.
- Drop the matching module in, screw it down, reconnect the ribbon, and reassemble.
- Calibrate the new stick afterward (the kits include a one-key or software calibration step).
Watch out for: ordering the wrong model's stick is the number-one mistake here, so confirm LCD-vs-OLED and Type A-vs-B before you buy; and lift each ribbon latch fully before pulling.

Generic and third-party controllers
Most no-name and older pads use a standard 3-pin, 10k potentiometer stick- the same part in a hundred different shells. There is no service manual, so the work is the same idea as the pads above, just without a map.
Tools: Phillips and/or Torx bits, opening pick, spudger, soldering iron, flux, desoldering pump and wick, tweezers, and a phone to photograph every step.
- Before buying anything, identify your stick: count the pins (most are 3-pin), and measure the shaft height and the module footprint. A module a millimetre too tall, or with a different pin pitch, will not seat.
- Find all the screws, including any hidden under stickers, rubber feet or grip pads.
- Open the shell, disconnect the battery and ribbons, and free the board.
- Desolder the old module's pins (usually around 14 joints), clearing every through-hole with pump and wick.
- Seat the matching replacement- standard, or a 3-pin Hall-effect module if you want it to last- solder it, check for bridges, and test before closing.
Watch out for: a mismatched module height or pin layout is the usual reason a generic swap fails; where you can, buy from a listing that names your exact controller model.

Know when to stop
If the board has lifted pads or corrosion, or you're just not confident with an iron, a replacement controller is the sensible call. No shame in it.
